On the experimental foundations of the Maxwell equations

چکیده

We begin by reviewing the derivation of generalized Maxwell equations from an operational definition of the electromagnetic field and the most basic notions of what constitutes a dynamical field theory. These equations encompass the familiar Maxwell equations as a special case but, in other cases, can predict birefringence, charge non-conservation, wave damping and other effects that the familiar Maxwell equations do not. It follows that observational constraints on such effects can restrict the dynamics of the electromagnetic field to be very like the familiar Maxwellian dynamics, thus, providing an empirical foundation for the Maxwell equations. We discuss some specific observational results that contribute to that foundation. keywords: Maxwell equations, birefringence, charge conservation PACS: 03.50 De, 04.80.-y, 41.20.-q, 03.30.+p

A CFD Simulation of Hydrogen Production in Microreactors

In this study, the modeling of hydrogen production process in microreactors by methanol-steam reforming reaction is investigated. The catalytic reaction of methanol-steam reforming producing hydrogen is simulated considering a 3D geometry for the microreactor. To calculate diffusion among species, mixture average correlations are compared to Stephan-Maxwell equations. The reactions occurring in...

ON MAXWELL'S STRESS FUNCTIONS FOR SOLVING THREE DIMENSIONAL ELASTICITY PROBLEMS IN THE THEORY OF ELASTICITY

The governing equations of three dimensional elasticity problems include the six Beltrami-Michell stress compatibility equations, the three differential equations of equilibrium, and the six material constitutive relations; and these are usually solved subject to the boundary conditions. The system of fifteen differential equations is usually difficult to solve, and simplified methods are usual...

Variational Formulations of Exact and Reduced Vlasov-Maxwell Equations

The foundations of gyrokinetic theory are reviewed with an emphasis on the applications of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods used in the derivation of nonlinear gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell equations. These reduced dynamical equations describe the turbulent evolution of low-frequency electromagnetic fluctuations in nonuniform magnetized plasmas with arbitrary magnetic geometry.

0 A gentle introduction to the foundations of classical electrodynamics : The meaning of the excitations ( D , H ) and the field strengths ( E , B ) Friedrich

The axiomatic structure of the electromagnetic theory is outlined. We will base classical electrodynamics on (1) electric charge conservation, (2) the Lorentz force, (3) magnetic flux conservation, and (4) on the Maxwell-Lorentz spacetime relations. This yields the Maxwell equations. The consequences will be drawn, inter alia, for the interpretation and the dimension of the electric and magneti...

Mechanistic Modeling of Organic Compounds Separation from Water via Polymeric Membranes

A mathematical model considering mass and momentum transfer was developed for simulation of ethanol dewatering via pervaporation process. The process involves removal of water from a water/ethanol liquid mixture using a dense polymeric membrane. The model domain was divided into two compartments including feed and membrane. For a description of water transport in ...
